In 1999, 3 Penny Opera had been around for just about two years. In that time the band recorded and released a 10-song cassette ("90% Live" in 1997) and a 10-song CD ("Ten Pieces for Voice, Strings, and Percussion" in 1999). By mid-1999 the group was ready to take the next step with its recordings, creating a 6-song EP composed of both new material and some older songs that the band thought deserved a little more love in the studio.

The result is this, a previously unreleased EP that came to be known affectionately as "mp3po" simply because all that remains of the recordings are these mp3 files. The band hopes you enjoy "mp3po," released a mere 16 years after its conception.

"mp3po" was recorded over several weeks during the summer of 1999 in the living room of a home inhabited by 80% of Wiley’s other band, megalo. Eric Hsu handled most all aspects of the recording, investing his time and sanity to see the record come to fruition. Actually, in hindsight, it seems his compensation for the recording was having half of 3 Penny Opera follow him to live in Brooklyn.
